When the first trailer for this movie came out, it was universally panned as fans did not like the way Sonic looked.
Surprisingly the producers bowed to their demands, the CGI work was refined. But upon watching the movie, you realise that Sonic’s looks were not the movie’s only problem.
To be fair, kids will love this blue anthropomorphic hedgehog computer game character, especially his high-speed running and over-the-top childish antics.
After his need for speed gets a young Sonic into trouble in his own world, his guardian sends him into ours, along with a small bag of rings that enable him to travel from one world to another.
Years later we find that Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has made a home for himself in the woods of Green Hills, Montana where he watches the townsfolk go about their daily routine.
His favourite people to watch are local sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and his veterinarian wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter).
One night, Sonic accidentally causes a massive power outage, which comes to the attention of the Pentagon officials, who in turn reluctantly hire the egotistical roboticist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to find the root cause of the problem.
Robotnik tracks Sonic to Tom’s house, forcing both Tom and Sonic to go on the lam.
There are lots of high speed chases, lot of slo-mo action (that remind you of Quicksilver’s antics in X-Men: Days of Future Past) and even an unnecessary scene where Robotnik does a crazy dance.
There are times in the movie when you can’t decide if you hate Sonic or Robotnik more.
Carrey, to his credit, makes for one comical villain and steals the show.
Unfortunately there is no chemistry between Tom and Sonic, and scenes that are supposed to make you feel really sad for this lonely hedgehog, lack any impact.
However if you like watching a little blue creature dashing about, this movie will appeal to you.
Look out for the end credits though, when another popular character from the game shows up.
