Management and Science University (MSU) student Abdul Azim Aliyas has bagged two gold medals at the 20th Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) meet.

Cycling at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur lass Abdul Azim was representing Negeri Sembilan beat Sabah’s Lim Chun Kiat for the state’s first gold at SUKMA XX with four minutes 30.157 in the qualifying round and 4:28.808s in the final round for 4km individual pursuit.

He bagged his second gold at SUKMA 2022 via the men’s Omnium title after collecting 170 points, followed by Terengganu’s Wan Abdul Rahman Hamdan (155 points) and Sabah’s Lim Chun Kiat (114).

He is also a member of the national junior cycling team and also cycles professionally for Kuwait Cycling Pro since March this year is a student of Diploma in Outdoor Recreation at MSU’s School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA).

Despite failing to win any medals at the SUKMA 2016 in Perak, Abdul Azim recent success proved that with determination and hard work he is now considered among the potential cyclist to excel in the country.

His journey as a junior cyclist begins in 2016 with Negeri Sembilan, where he actively takes part in many tournaments locally as well as internationally. Among the tournaments including the Junior Cycling Malaysia (JCM) Road Race Circuit, the National Track Championship 2019, the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships 2019 in Germany, the Asia Track Cycling Championship 2020 in South Korea, Championships, the Asia Track Cycling Championship 2019 in Indonesia, the Southeast Asia Grand Prix 2019 in Negeri Sembilan, as well as the JCM European and Australia Tour.

Meanwhile as a team member of Kuwait Cycling Pro, a UCI continental professional cycling team, Abdul Azim participated in various tournaments in 2022 including the Tour de Taiwan, the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns Cup Tour of Thailand, Turkey’s Tour of Sakarya, Grand Prix Cappadocia, Grand Prix Develi, Grand Prix Kapuzbaşı and Grand Prix Tomarza, Ronde de l’Oise of France, Tour of Estonia, Sint Elooisprijs Ruddervoorde of Belgium as well as Circuito del Porto - Trofeo Arvedi of Italy.

As a recipient of the MSU Outstanding Rewards Scholarship (MORE) under the Yayasan MSU and Biasiswa YB Menteri Pengajian Tinggi Atlet Cemerlang IPT. Abdul Azim also paid tribute to his parent Aliyas Said and Nor Ainun Mat@Muhammad, National Sports Council, Kuwait Cycling Pro, Negeri Sembilan Sports State Council, coach, sponsors, and friend for their tireless support and help.

Abdul Azim was inspired by British former professional road and track racing cyclist, Sir Bradley Wiggins.

“He began his cycling career on the track, but later to road cycling. He won world titles and Olympic gold, the only rider to have won both World and Olympic championships on both the track and the road as well as winning the Tour de France. I would like to emulate his inspirational success story, winning is when you set big, ambitious, bold goals and then meet them.”
