The global pandemic has resulted in an increased demand for an IT-skilled workforce. More and more people opt to work from home offices which require integrating existing technologies into their daily work routines.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur via Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT) has recently introduced a new programme, Foundation in Computer Technology (FiCT) on top of its other existing academic programmes.

FiCT aims to provide a fast-track opportunity for those who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. Thus, it is hardly surprising to see close to 300 students enrolling on the one-year programme ever since it was introduced in November 2018.

“Who could resist the opportunity of being directly absorbed into any of the degree programmes offered by Universiti Kuala Lumpur after just a year of study,“ said Wan Suriyani Che Wan Ahmad, Head of Foundation Centre, UniKL MIIT.

“FiCT is a combination of academic skills and content-specific modules, providing an introductory ground to computer technology as well as developing one’s critical thinking, academic literacy, and communication skills.”

Irfan Badzlin bin Badrul Hisham, 21, a participant of the Worldskills Asia 2021 (Online Friendly Skills Games) and one of the competitors for the Global Cybersecurity Camp 2022 Taiwan, owes his success and new-found confidence to his FiCT experience.

“The programme has shaped me into what I am now. During our FICT year, we were encouraged to mingle with students of different programmes and nationalities. We were given tasks that required exploration and challenged our critical thinking and that was when I discovered my passion for cybersecurity!”

Currently attending the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Computer System Security programme at UniKL MIIT, Irfan has never looked back ever since. He vows to excel in both studies and co-curricular activities.

Being one of the leading IT institutions in Malaysia and linked with numerous high-profiled industries and university partners from South Korea, UniKL MIIT is the place where cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, virtual and augmented reality are introduced as students enrol into their degree programmes.

Emirul Iskandar bin Haris Leong, another 21-year-old FiCT alumni, won the Silver Award in the International Virtual Expo of Innovation Product and System Design 2021 (In-ViDE 2021) with the virtual reality games project that his team developed during their Foundation programme. In-ViDE 2021 is an innovation competition, in which, innovative products and systems related to various science and technological fields are exhibited as a solution for the presented problems.

Just like Irfan, Emirul is currently attending a Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons.) in Computer System Security.

Other than Computer System Security, other programmes that await the FiCT students as they venture into their undergraduate degree year would be Computer Engineering, Computer Animation, Interactive Multimedia Design, Networking System, Software Engineering, and UniKL MIIT’s latest offering, Internet of Things.
