Angels acquire SS Iglesias from Orioles

03 Dec 2020 / 10:52 H.

The Los Angeles Angels acquired shortstop Jose Iglesias from the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday for right-handers Jean Pinto and Garrett Stallings.

Iglesias, 30, thrived in the shortened 2020 season while batting .373 with three homers and 24 RBIs in 39 games in his lone season with the Orioles.

Overall, he is a .278 career hitter with 35 homers and 271 RBIs in 841 games over nine seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Orioles. He was an All-Star for Detroit in 2015.

Iglesias is scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2021.

The acquisition of Iglesias came on the same day the Angels declined to tender a 2021 contract to four-time Gold Glover Andrelton Simmons, making the latter a free agent.

Simmons was the Angels' starting shortstop the past five seasons but was limited to 30 games in 2020 due to ankle injuries. He batted .297 with no homers and 10 RBIs.

Pinto, 19, made three starts at the Rookie level in 2019 and went 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA.

Stallings, 23, was a fifth-round pick in 2019 out of the University of Tennessee but has yet to make his professional debut.
