The Portland Timbers announced Tuesday that they have signed defender Larrys Mabiala to a multiyear extension.

The 33-year-old Mabiala has eight goals and two assists in 83 regular-season matches (81 starts) in four seasons with the Timbers. He was scoreless in 13 matches last season but did score a goal during the team's victory in the MLS is Back Tournament final.

"Larrys is a leader in the locker room who provides valuable experience and knowledge of the league," Portland general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in a news release. "We are thrilled that Larrys and his family will continue to call Portland home."

The Frenchman also has made 12 career appearances for the Democratic of the Congo national team.

"I am very happy to renew my contract here with the Portland Timbers and it wouldn't be possible without my family," Mabiala said. "I'm so blessed to extend my journey with such an incredible organization from top to bottom, which includes the front office and the coaching staff, and getting to work every day with my teammates. I'm focused on putting in the work to bring another trophy to the Rose City."
