MAMARONECK, N.Y., Sept 19 (Reuters) - Winged Foot continued to roil competitors on Saturday, with its narrow fairways and slick, fast greens presenting a formidable challenge, even as blustery early conditions eased somewhat.

Matthew Wolff got a pair of birdies in the first four holes, leaving him two strokes behind former Masters champion Patrick Reed, who grabbed the halfway lead with his sterling short game on Friday to begin round three at four-under par.

Rory McIlroy shot two birdies on the front nine as he inched his way up the leaderboard, with the four-time major winner working to redeem himself after a six-over par round on Friday.

The U.S. Open, which was pushed back from June to Sept. 17-20 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, is being played without fans due to health and safety concerns. (Reporting by Amy Tennery; Editing by Ken Ferris)
