PETALING JAYA: Two military helicopters belonging to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) crashed shortly after taking off near its airbase in Lumut, Perak this morning.

It is learnt that the helicopters were among several involved in a flying exercise in conjunction with RMN’s 90th anniversary celebrations.

Preliminary reports confirm the involvement of an AW139 and a Fennec helicopter in the collision, which occurred during the fly-over exercise.

The two helicopters took off from Padang Sitiawan at approximately 9.03am.

The AW139 helicopter crashed onto the steps of the Lumut Stadium, while the Fennec aircraft plunged into the swimming pool of the Lumut Sports Complex.

There were at least 10 crew onboard both helicopters during the time of the crash.
