25 units of workers quarters in Bukit Tambun razed

NIBONG TEBAL: About 100 foreign workers were left homeless when 25 units of their quarters at a construction site at Lorong Merpati Indah, Bukit Tambun near here were destroyed in a fire today.

According to a spokesman of the Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre, most of those staying at the workers' quarters were working at the construction site during the 11.54am incident.

He said several workers and their wives were in the workers' quarters but managed to save themselves after realising a fire had broke out there.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still being investigated, he said here today.

He said 20 firefighers and two engines assisted by volunteer firefighters managed to douse the fire at 12.17pm. — Bernama
