Police to probe Khairul's conspiracy claim

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will record a statement from Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun before deciding if there are grounds to investigate his claim of a top-level conspiracy by three individuals to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak from his position.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pix) said today that investigators will begin the probe only after ascertaining the basis of Khairul's complaint.
It is learnt that the case is being investigated by the federal CID and Khairul is expected to be called in today to have a statement recorded.
On Tuesday, urging a police investigation, Khairul lodged a police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters alleging former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed as the conspirators behind the plot.
He had claimed in his report that the trio had without authorisation provided US enforcement agencies with classified documents that had been tampered with false information to act in their favour and oust Najib. Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Bung Moktar said they never asked Khairul to lodge a police report against two former top government civil servants and the outgoing MACC chief.
"His action does not reflect on Umno. If he has solid evidence he must hand it over to the relevant authorities," Bung told theSun.
Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Mat Akin said Malaysians stand with the trio to defend the institutions they are linked to.
Shamsul, who is also the Bukit Katil parliamentarian said Attorney-general Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali should re-look his decision to close the case on the RM2.6 billion donation given to the Prime Minister.
He said this is in light of the United States Department of Justice's (DOJ) lawsuits to seize more than US$1 billion in assets allegedly purchased with money embezzled from 1MDB.
