KEMAMAN: The Terengganu government has agreed to the demand by the Chinese community for the return of about a hectare site in Jakar to build a funeral parlour, said Mentri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
He said the site had been acquired for the purpose by the then PAS state government in 1999 but was revoked by Barisan Nasional (BN) when it took over the state in 2004.
"The one they (Chinese community) have now is small, can accommodate only one body, if there are two deaths, it will be a problem," he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house with the Chinese community in Bandar Chukai here yesterday.
He said the state government had also approved the construction of an arch to symbolise the presence and contributions of the Chinese community in Kemaman.
Meanwhile, State Welfare, Women and Family Development and National Unity Committee chairman Hanafiah Mat said the arch, which would be similar to the one in Kuala Terengganu, would be built in front of a Chinese school in Kemaman. — Bernama
