PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has been ranked first among four countries with the best healthcare this year, according to InternationalLiving.com.
It noted that Malaysia’s medical tourism is booming, following a stronger US dollar currency, cheaper air travel and mounting healthcare costs in Western countries.
Two cities, George Town in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, were named as the two main medical centres which services international airlines from around the world.
The report also accredited Malaysia having some of the best-trained doctors in Asia, with the large number of them being trained in the US, Australia, or the United Kingdom. The mileage of them being able to speak English puts a feather in the country’s cap too.
The report also commented that hospitals in the two cities are among Southeast Asia’s first recipients of the United States’ prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) certification – a benchmark for healthcare service providers globally.
It stated that there are no less than eight JCI-accredited hospitals.
Other areas which has been noted for medical treatments includes cosmetic surgery, dental work, and dermatology.
“In 2016, Malaysia was visited by more than 1 million medical tourists from around the globe, a figure that is certain to rise in 2017,” it said.
Other countries mentioned are Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico.
