Kit Siang questions cabinet's consensus over Hadi's bill

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has questioned whether there was indeed a consensus reached among cabinet members over the issue of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang's private member's bill.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had made an announcement in Sabah recently that a consensus was indeed achieved between the 13 component parties in Barisan Nasional.
Lim said he was perplexed on why MCA, Gerakan and MIC did not raise any objection over the matter if a consensus had already been reached.
"I want to ask MCA, Gerakan, MIC and all the other non-Umno ministers whether there is consensus in the cabinet for the government to give priority in Parliament for Abdul Hadi's bill to be debated and voted on in the current meeting of Parliament," he said.
"Furthermore, whether there is cabinet consensus for the government to take over the bill after Parliament had adopted Abdul Hadi's private member's bill motion," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby here.
Lim also called for all 15 non-Umno cabinet members to force the issue of consensus over the bill in the cabinet meeting tomorrow.
PAS has sought to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 through a parliamentary bill since last year, despite massive public backlash.
