Third album incoming

IN typical Billie Eilish fashion, the Grammy and Oscars winner has announced her third full-length album in a social media post with capital letters and emojis, along with the album’s cover art. Titled Hit Me Hard and Soft, the album will be released on May 17.

“The album does exactly as the title suggests. It hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically while bending genres and defying trends along the way. Hit Me Hard and Soft journeys through a vast and expansive audio landscape, immersing listeners into a full spectrum of emotions,” read the album’s press announcement.

As is tradition, the album was written by Eilish and her brother and musical collaborator Finneas, who also produced it. According to the announcement, it will be available on all digital platforms and “all physical formats in limited variants on the same day, with the same track listing and using 100% recyclable materials”.

The last bit is reflective of Eilish’s recent comments about the environmental wastefulness of physical products such as vinyl.

Though Eilish and Finneas have spent the last few months on the awards campaign trail promoting What Was I Made For?, their song from the blockbuster Barbie film and soundtrack, they have not released a new album since Happily Ever After in 2021, although they have toured and released other material.

The announcement comes after Eilish confirmed in February that her new album has been mastered.
