No infringement by Betty Chew and law firm over Penang CM house purchase, says state exco
GEORGE TOWN: There is nothing wrong for a solicitor to act on behalf of his/her spouse in conveyancing matters according to Penang Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh.
The lawyer by trade was responding to Penang MCA Youth who questioned why a law firm where Betty Chew, wife of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, worked was involved in the purchase of a Jalan Pinhorn property by Lim.
Jagdeep noted the Sales and Purchase Agreement (S&P) was not attested by Chew, who he said only vetted the document.
He pointed out that Chew was only a legal assistant in the firm where she worked from Jan 1, 2014, to Oct 1, 2015.
He also added that the loan agreement was prepared by a third party firm, Zaid Ibrahim and Co, which was appointed by the bank.
“She (Chew) only vetted the documents, she did not attest the S&P nor the transfer,” he said in a press conference.
Agreeing with him was Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer, who is a practicing lawyer, who said no such bars were placed by Legal Profession Act 1976.
“Do not issue unfounded statements,” he added.
