Buntong shakes off 'gangster town' tag

IPOH: Buntong once dubbed as a "gangsterism" area has produced several Indian top police officers who hold senior and important positions.
Among them are Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation deputy director Datuk A. Thaiveegan and his brother Sungai Siput district deputy police chief , DSP A. Pamnaswaran (correct spelling) and former Perak Deputy Police Chief Datuk A. Paramasivam.
Perak Crime Prevention and Community Policing department officer, DSP Ng Bo Huat (community policing) said these police officers have not only contributed their untiring service and dedication to the nation but had also helped to bring about many changes in Buntong.
"The crime rate especially gangsterism has dropped and is a positive sign from the community safety point of view," he told reporters after attending the Buntong Rukun Tetangga Area Chinese New Year Open House here today.
Also present were Rukun Tetangga chairman Cheah Ban Foo and Kinta distruct national unity officer Lidiawati Zamri.
"While the crime rate had dropped and is under control in Buntong, we still have to tackle drug abuse and will continue to carry out operations with the cooperation of RT teams and other NGOs," he added.
He also said that the public had given their support and cooperation to the police besides the 530 RT areas and 61 community policing groups in the state.
