GEORGE TOWN: DAP is up in arms over the arrest of its state assistant treasurer, Jeffery Chew Gim Eam, by police after a party representative lodged a police report about a fake news video clip earlier this week.
DAP lawyer R. S. N. Rayer told a press conference that Chew was apparently arrested by the police on grounds that he was behind the forwarding of the video clip, which depicted DAP as the enemy of the Malays here.
Chew was entrusted by DAP to monitor fake news content online over the course of the general election. On Monday, he came across the footage depicting the DAP in a negative light.
He promptly instructed party colleague Teoh Koon Gee to lodge a police report over the video at the district police headquarters in Pattani Road here.
Over the course of the investigation, the police allegedly called up Chew to record his statement on Tuesday, before proceeding to arrest him on Wednesday for forwarding the video clip to Teoh.
He was investigated under legislation governing multimedia offences.
But Rayer said the police should be probing the matter under the fake news legislation.
In other words, the person lodging the report ended up being detained, said Rayer, who urged the police to clarify their actions.
He said that Chew was just doing his job highlighting the presence of fake news, and the video was wrong as it unfairly implicated DAP as a racist party.
According to Rayer, Chew was later released on police bail, but he stressed that it was unbecoming for police to react in such a manner.
Both the state CPO Comm Datuk A. Thaiveegan and George Town OCPD ACP Anuar Omar could not be reached for comments at press time.
