Movie review: Sabrina

AS FAR as horror movies go, this one unfortunately does not have enough scares to haunt you after you leave the cinema.
Also, there are just too many familiar ‘scary’ moments culled from popular Hollywood horror films such as The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun, to name a few, in this film.
The story is about Aiden (Christian Sugiono), who owns a successful toy company. His company’s latest new toy, a doll he named Sabrina, is selling like hot cakes.
Happily married to Maria (Luna Maya), life seems perfect except for one thing.
Aiden has been looking after his young niece Vanya (Richelle Georgette Skornicki) since the death of his brother and sister-in-law. But the child has taken an intense dislike to Maria.
Vanya misses her mother Andini so much that she plays a spirit game and calls out for her mother from the world of the dead. Then strange things begin to happen in their lives and their house.
Vanya’s Sabrina doll seems to have come alive and starts to terrorise everyone. Vanya soon realises that the spirit living in her doll is that of a demon named Bahgiah which wants a human body.
The audience will begin to understand why the demon has chosen to haunt this family.
Sabrina does have some scary scenes that will give you goosebumps. There’s also an interesting twist to the ending. Unfortunately, the lack of originality is its death knell.
Overall, I have seen far better scary films from Indonesia.
