Reaching out to endometriosis patients

SUBANG JAYA: One out of 10 women is at risk of endometriosis and could be contributing to the national fertility rate decrease which is expected to decline to the lowest level recorded since the formation of Malaysia in 1963, with 15.8 births per 1,000 people compared to 16.1 in 2017.
Surita Mogan, president of the Endometriosis Association (MyEndosis) Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, said the pain caused by endometriosis was chronic and debilitating.
"It is a taboo subject among Malaysians who often fear that it may affect relationships with spouse and in-laws as it carries a high chance of pregnancy complications," she told theSun at the Endometriosis Patient Safety Day talk 2018 today which aims to educate women and share experiences coping with the debilitating condition.
"Many women choose to stay behind closed doors about endometriosis and are often forced to go on with their daily routine with with the help of painkillers," she added.
The Patient Safety Day 2018 organised in collaboration with MyEndosis and Taylor's University and supported by Bayer. Co was held to highlight the role of various stakeholders to ensure endometriosis patient safety.
Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus — the endometrium — grows outside the uterus.
Endometriosis usually involves the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond pelvic organs.
With endometriosis, displaced endometrial tissue continues to act as it normally would — it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle.
Because this displaced tissue has no way to exit your body, it becomes trapped.
When endometriosis involves the ovaries, cysts called endometriomas may form. Surrounding tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions — abnormal bands of fibrous tissue that can cause pelvic tissues and organs to stick to each other.
Endometriosis can cause pain — sometimes severe — especially during your period. Fertility problems also may develop.
