Covid-19: 40 new cases, one death (Updated)

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry announced 40 new Covid-19 positive cases as of 12pm today, with one new death reported.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the total number of infections in the country now stands at 5,820, with total active cases at 1,764 while 37 positive cases remain in the intensive care unit (ICU). Out of this, 17 cases need ventilator support.

He also said 95 cases have received successful treatment and been discharged, bringing the total number of those who have recovered to 3,957.

The total amount of fatalities from Covid-19 stands at 99, following the death of one person.

The 99th death was that of a 78-year-old Malaysian man who had a medical history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. He was treated at the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Johor on April 7 and was pronounced dead on April 27 at 4.31am.

Hisham said is on the path to recovery in the fight against the Covid-19 , thanks to the targeted approach taken by the government such as the enforcement of the movement control order (MCO), which is proving to be effective in the fight against the pandemic.

He said this was indicated by the number of daily positive cases that has remained below 100 for the past 10 days

Hisham, however, cautioned against complacency as the flattening of the curve would amount to very little in the absence of a vaccine, and added that the war against the pandemic is far from over.
