SUNGAI SIPUT: Police have arrested a man believed to be involved in nine cable theft cases in Sungai Siput since the beginning of the year.

Sungai Siput District police chief Supt Mohd Khaizam Ahmad Shahabudin said the 38-year-old suspect was nabbed while trying to escape after stealing cables belonging to a telecommunications company at Ladang Changkat Salak here at about 4.20 pm on Friday.

He said the suspect who was on a motorcycle, hit and injured a policeman during his attempt to flee.

“After the collision, the suspect tried to escape to the main road, however, his motorcycle skidded and he fell. Checks on the motorcycle found 98 pieces of cut cable wires as well as some cutting tools.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in nine cases of cable theft since the beginning of 2020, resulting is losses of about RM200,000,“ he said during a press conference at the Sungai Siput district police headquarters here, today.

Mohd Khaizam said the suspect had 16 criminal and drug-related records, while a urine test revealed he was positive for methamphetamine and morphine.

The suspect has been remanded for five days until Nov 11, he added. — Bernama
