100 seized vehicles to be auctioned off next month: RTD

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 100 seized vehicles, including luxury names like Mercedes Benz and BMW, will be up for auction next month, says City Road Transport Department (RTD) director Datuk Ismail Mohd Zawawi.

He said the vehicles comprising, 34 motorcycles and 66 cars, will be auctioned off on Oct 9 at the Kuala Lumpur RTD headquarters along Jalan Genting Klang from 9am.

“The auction book will be sold at City’s RTD Financial Unit from Sept 25 till Oct 8 between 8.30am and 4pm.

“The auction items were categorised as vehicles which can be used on the road and scrap. For the vehicles that must be scrapped, only licensed scrap metal operators are allowed to bid.

“The operators must bring the equipment to dismantle the vehicles to the RTD office, and they will be provided space to do so,“ he told a press conference at the city RTD headquarters here yesterday.

Ismail added this was the second time this year that the department was holding such an auction, with the first one on April 30.

A total of 100 vehicles, including 66 cars, worth a total of RM1.053 million were successfully auctioned.

On clones cars, Ismail said many people opted to buy cloned cars, mostly supplied from Singapore as they were at least 40% cheaper compared to the original vehicles.

“The practice is against the law. There are some cases where the buyers are genuine and don’t know that they’ve purchased cloned cars. There are also cases where they knowingly buy these cars because they are considerably cheaper,“ he said.

Cloned cars are usually foreign vehicles that appear as Malaysian-registered vehicles using identical number plates taken from a similar legitimately-registered model.
