JOHOR BARU: The Year 1 to Year 5 student of the 12 hot spot schools, involving a total of 11,256 students affected by air pollution incidents in June, will be given leave during the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.

The schools are Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kopok, SK Tanjung Puteri Resort, SK Taman Scientex, SK Kota Masai, SK Pasir Gudang 4, SK Taman Bukit Dahlia, SK Taman Megah Ria and SK Taman Pasir Putih.

Also involved were SK Taman Rinting 3, SK Pasir Gudang 1, SK Pasir Gudang 3 and SK Kota Masai 3.

These schools are located within a 5 km radius from the Pasir Gudang industrial area.

Pasir Gudang District Education Officer Jasni Omar said that the school leave from Sept 4 to 11, was given as a precautionary measure in case of any unexpected incident.

“During that time, there will be only 2,175 UPSR candidates in the school, and there will be no other students from other classes.

“In addition, we encourage the school’s management to place the UPSR candidates on the first and second floors of school buildings, as we have been advised to do so by the Department of Environment (DOE),“ he told reporters at the Knowledge on Personal Safety Awareness in Pasir Gudang Campaign at SK Taman Megah Ria, here today.

Jasni said the district education department had been given assurances from various agencies including the DOE and the Department of Health to help the school in making necessary preparations during the examination.

“For the other examination, we also plan to take similar efforts during the Form Three Assessment (PT3), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations,“ he said.

Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim, who launched the campaign hoped that parents would be more confident in sending their children to sit for their examination with the preparedness and precautionary measures taken by the Pasir Gudang District Education Office.

In addition, the District Education Office in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Ihsan Johor and 3M Sdn Bhd will be distributing 1,000 pieces of 9042 model mask which contain activated carbon that can neutralise odours to the involved UPSR candidates. — Bernama
