ALOR SETAR: Twenty-five new telecommunication towers, which are being built in Kedah, are expected to be operational in stages starting the first quarter of next year, the state legislative assembly was told today.

Information, Communications and Multimedia, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Wan Romani Wan Salim said for the fixed line broadband service, under the Suburban Broadband (SUBB) project, another 4,736 connections are still in the implementation stage and are expected to be completed in stages by the end of this year.

Replying to a question from Azhar Ibrahim (PAS-Ayer Hitam), he said locations with poor access or no 4G coverage had also been identified.

For the mobile broadband service, Wan Romani said a total of 105 new towers would be built while 1,162 existing communication transmitters would be upgraded to 4G technology.

“All these initiatives will be implemented in stages from this year until 2022,“ he said.

In addition, Wan Romani said under the JENDELA plan, the fiber optic network would be expanded to 91,393 premises in the state which would provide access to gigabit network speeds. — Bernama
