KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 65 deaths and 8,570 road crashes involving 13,038 vehicles were recorded in the first five days of the road safety operation, Op Selamat, conducted by the police since its launch on Saturday, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.
In a statement issued today, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Azisman Alias said the highest number of collisions were recorded in Selangor at 2,701 cases, followed by Johor (1,348) and Kuala Lumpur (1,019).
Of the 65 deaths, motorcyclists and pillion riders accounted for the highest number at 47.
The operation which will end on Feb 1, also saw the issuance of 125,464 summonses, with 77,042 summonses involving six main offences including the use of mobile phones while driving.
At a press conference in Ipoh, JSPT deputy director Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain noted a 14% rise (amounting to an increase of 14,956 cases) this year, compared to the road safety operation conducted during the same period last year.
However, the number of deaths had dropped from 79 last year to 65 this year. - Bernama
