GEORGE TOWN: Penang contemporary realism artist Sharon Siew Suan Kow, 50, held her very first solo art exhibition at G Art Gallery, featuring her artworks which are done using colour pencils.

With the art exhibition themed “Still”, the 20 paintings by the self-taught artist expressed a sense of calm, meditative and zen-like state with common everyday objects such as pebbles and feathers.

Her inspirations derive from simple, everyday subjects which she uses metaphorically to create a visual understanding of logic and emotions.

Siew said that her proposals to hold an art exhibition were initially not approved by several organisations due to the use of an unconventional art medium.

“Most of them have the ‘wait-and-see’ attitude and would prefer to follow the trend of the common art mediums, such as acrylic or oil-based paintings,” she told reporters after the launch of the art exhibition.

The art exhibition is open between Sept 24 and Dec 21.

Siew said she planned to venture into surrealism art, while still using her favourite art medium.

She said that although surrealism art is an uncharted territory for her, she is committed to learn and experiment after being inspired by various animation films and movies.

“Shows like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ are some of my favourite shows that inspired me to do surrealism art and I’m looking forward to getting out from my comfort zone by doing so,” she added. — Bernama
