Coronavirus: Public need not worry about attending Perak CNY celebrations

IPOH: The public need not worry about attending the Perak Chinese New Year celebrations to be held here on Thursday, following the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Chairman of the state Tourism, Arts and Culture committee, Tan Kar Hing (pix), said the state government has decided to continue with the celebrations after consulting with the Health Ministry.

“This includes the Gopeng Member of Parliament, Dr Lee Boon Chye, who is also Health Deputy Minister who said ‘the show must go on’ and (advised) not to create panic such as seen on the social media.

“The virus (2019-nCoV) is scary but the panic caused by the fake news is more worrying because it is not based on facts. It is only perception, but we have taken precautionary measures for the celebrations, and at the gateways into Perak,” he told reporters after visiting Eco Park 1, Bandar Seri Botani, where the event will be held from 6pm until 11pm.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, will grace the event.

To date, the number of reported 2019-nCoV cases in Malaysia remain at eight while there are 183 involving patients under investigation and 18 still waiting for results of laboratory tests. - Bernama
