KOTA BARU: Some 1,500 cartons of the ‘Saat’ brand white cigarettes, worth RM450,000 including in unpaid tax, were seized by the 7th Battalion of the General Operations Force (PGA7) in a raid at an illegal jetty in Tanjung Baru, Pasir Mas, yesterday.

PGA7 commanding officer Supt Azhari Nusi, in a statement today, said the raid was conducted about 10 pm following a tip-off after the team spotted a suspicious boat coming from Sungai Golok heading to Kampung Tok Rusa, where a group of men were then seen unloading boxes from the boat into a Toyota Unser car.

When the raiding team approached, the suspects fled on foot into the nearby undergrowth or jumped into the river, he said, adding that following checks, the boxes were found to contain the white cigarettes.

He said the team also seized 1,044 kg of frozen chicken, worth RM10,440, from a van which skidded when the driver lost control of the wheel in an attempt to flee from the authorities in Kampung Jejawi, Rantau Panjang early today.

The chicken consignment was believed to have been smuggled into the state from a neighbouring country. — Bernama
