KUANTAN: A goldsmith in Pekan near here lost RM40,000 in jewellery items to a bogus policeman yesterday.
Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 47-year-old victim claimed the suspect, in his mid 40s and wearing a white/blue t-shirt, walked into her shop in Pekan town at about 2.10pm.
The suspect introduced himself as ‘Din’ to the victim’s husband and told them that he was there to buy some jewellery as a gift for the district police chief and an officer from Bukit Aman.
“The suspect said the gift was in conjunction with National Day and the district police chief’s promotion, before choosing the items he wanted.
“The suspect then brought the jewellery items out of the shop on the pretext of showing it to a high-ranked officer, and left a thick envelope with the victim, telling him that it contained RM50,000 cash,“ he told reporters here today.
Mohd Wazir said among the items the suspect had taken were a set of sapphire jewels tied with white gold, a pair of ruby, sapphire and emerald earrings, a bracelet made of sapphire and white gold and four ruby and sapphire mixed with diamonds rings.
The suspect also instructed the victim not to open the envelope until he was told to do so, but the victim opened it anyway after the suspect failed to return to the store.
“The victim claimed that the envelope contained only pieces of blank paper,“ he said.
The victim lodged a report at the Pekan district police headquarters yesterday, and an investigation is being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. — Bernama
