Housewife jailed seven months for abusing daughter

KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife was jailed seven months by the sessions court here today for abusing her six-year-old daughter, last month.

Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah handed down the sentence after the 29-year-old woman changed her plea to guilty.

The court ordered the woman to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on July 22.

She admitted to have abused her daughter by hitting her with a rattan stick, which caused injuries to the victim’s right shoulder at her house in Sentul here at 11.30pm on July 18.

The charge was made under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years or a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson.

The woman, who was unrepresented, appealed to the judge to impose a mild sentence on the grounds that she had two other children, aged three-years and eight months. - Bernama
