KUALA LUMPUR: The Medical Relief Society of Malaysia (Mercy Malaysia) celebrated its 20th anniversary by planting 20 trees of various species at the Kepong Metropolitan Park, today.
The effort by Mercy Malaysia, among others, is aimed at protecting the environment and the ecosystem other than involving the volunteers of the organisation in an activity which is non-technical and more casual in nature.
Mercy Malaysia’s president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said the activity also underlined the organisation’s disinclination against being left behind in the environment and eco-system conservation efforts.
‘’Overall, we expect the climatic problem will be the major problem for the global society. So, from this lesson, we begin the initiative of planting trees so that our flora and fauna are maintained in the best possible manner,’’ he said in his speech at a tree planting and media appreciation programme.
About 50 volunteers took part in the programme, which was held with the co-operation of Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the peninsula Malaysia Forestry Department. Four species of trees, namely, ‘cengal’, ‘kapur’, ‘meranti tembaga’ and ‘tampoi’ were planted during the programme.
Bernama and nine other media organisations received souvenirs from Mercy Malaysia as a sign of appreciation, at the same programme, which was handed over by Mercy Malaysia’s vice president III, Prof Dr Shalimar Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Mercy Malaysia exco, Norazam Ab Samah said the organisation was planning to register Mercy Malaysia’s office in southern Yemen.
‘’It is specifically to help provide clean water, repair accommodations and hold children nutrition programmes for internal refugees in Yemen.
‘’The office there will function as a co-ordinator for all programmes. We have also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Field Medical Foundation (Yemen) in early December towards this end,” he added. - Bernama
