Organisers of ICERD ‘thanksgiving’ event must follow conditions set by DBKL: IGP

Cops to monitor rally

KUALA LUMPUR: The police will closely monitor the “thanksgiving” ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) rally on Dec 8.

Inspector-General of police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun (pix) said his men will monitor the gathering thoroughly to ensure order is maintained.

“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has allowed the event and the venue (Dataran Merdeka) is owned and under the purview of DBKL,“ he told a press conference after presenting diplomas to Unikop college students at the Police Training College yesterday.

“We hope there won’t be any problems. We have also reminded the organisers to follow the law.

Although DBKL gave them approval, they also stated conditions for the organisers to follow.”

Mohamad Fuzi added that police would be issuing a permit to the rally organisers.

The gathering was initially planned as a protest against ICERD, but the organisers said it will now be an event to celebrate the government’s decision not to ratify it.

The Home Ministry have repeatedly urged the organisers not to proceed with the event, saying the rally was now irrelevant.

However, on Monday, DBKL gave its approval to the organisers to use Jalan Raja for the event, with the police following suit.

On another matter, Mohamad Fuzi confirmed that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy would be called in on Tuesday for his statement to be recorded over recent protests in relation to the Seafield Sri Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya.

He is among nine individuals required by police to have their statements recorded.
