NIBONG TEBAL: A palm oil mill in Sungai Jawi here was destroyed in a fire last night, and the fire department will need to carry out an ‘overhaul’ process until tomorrow morning to ensure no other fires occur.
Nibong Tebal Fire Station chief Noor Asfariza Mohamad Abdul Kadir said the department received an emergency call at 12.34 am regarding the factory fire estimated to have occurred over an area of 4,150 square metres.
“The fire was extinguished about five hours later, with almost the entire factory razed, but work to control the fire from spreading (overhaul) is still underway, and it is expected to continue until early tomorrow morning,“ she said when contacted today.
She said the incident did not result in any injuries or casualties, and the cause of the fire and the total losses were still being assessed.
According to Noor Asfariza, the situation was currently under control and eight fire engines were at the scene to carry out an overhaul process, which involved a very large area amid strong wind conditions.
Dozens of fire engines were reported to be at the factory to carry out the firefighting operation which destroyed almost the entire premises at about 12.30 am.
Hundreds of officers and firefighters from the Nibong Tebal, Sungai Bakap, Perai and Bayan Baru fire stations as well as the Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) nearby helped in extinguishing the fire.
Residents near the factory had earlier panicked when they saw the fire raging high, and plumes of smoke could even be seen from the North-South Highway (Plus). — Bernama
