Penang’s first UTC begins operations Monday

GEORGE TOWN: The first Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Penang will open its doors this Monday at Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Finance Ministry has given the go-ahead for UTC Komtar to begin operations on the third floor.

“So far, 10 government agencies will start operating in Penang UTC and they include, among others, the Public Services Department (PSD), the Immigration Department, the Road Transport Department (RTD), the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

“They will soon be followed by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), JOBS Malaysia and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry,” he said in a media conference here today.

Operation hours are between 8am and 9pm, Mondays to Fridays and 8am to 5pm on weekends.

“The UTC will operate every day except for federal/state public holidays, and there will be no breaks except for Fridays from 12.15pm to 2.45pm,” he said.

Some RM20 million was spent to set up the UTC, Penang’s first, including for renovations and the upgrading of surrounding common properties, which was borne by the Penang Development Council, while the Finance Ministry had paid for the remaining RM5.24 million.

Chow hoped the move to set up the UTC in Komtar would provide a lifeline to businesses and attract more visitors to the city’s tallest and iconic building. - Bernama
