KUALA LUMPUR: A 28-year-old security guard who was found dead in a hotel room at Jalan Bukit Ceylon here on Saturday is believed to have been murdered by members of a scam syndicate.

Seven suspects aged between 18 and 26 were arrested over the case by police following the murder.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim today said the victim is believed to be a bank account mule linked to the syndicate and his identity was used to pull off scams.

He said the victim’s wife had on Friday lodged a police report claiming that her husband who had left home a day earlier for some unknown matters was no longer reachable.

Azmi said the case was initially classified as a missing person report but the victim’s wife had claimed that her husband was at an apartment near Jalan Kuching.

He said police conducted a check at the apartment on Friday and rescued four men and a woman who were confined at the house.

Azmi said the five victims were found to be also bank account mules of the syndicate.

He said acting on information, police went to a hotel on Saturday where the security guard was found dead on a bed in a room.

Azmi said a post mortem revealed that the man had died of blunt trauma to his head and face.

He said police then traced the seven suspects, arresting one at Jalan Kuching and the rest at a house in Bangsar South on Saturday and Sunday.

Azmi said police seized dozens of SIM cards, bank cards, cellphones, computers and an air gun from the suspects.

He said the motive behind the murder is believed to be linked to scamming activities.

Azmi said with the arrest of the suspects, police are confident of solving the case.
