BUTTERWORTH: A senior citizen met a fiery end after a two-storey house in Lorong Laksamana, Taman Telok Molek here, caught fire at about 6.30 am today.

Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the charred body of Azali Saad, 64, was found in his rented room at the upper level of the house.

“Based on initial information from the Fire Department, the fire broke out at a room upstairs and spread rapidly to the whole house as the upper level was made from wood. Tenants from the other two rooms managed to escape to safety,” he said today.

He added that the victim’s body was sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the fire had already destroyed over 70 per cent of the house when the team arrived at the location.

Nine fire engines with 50 officers and personnel as well as a volunteer team took part in the fire-fighting operation which ended at 7.15 am before discovering the victim’s charred remains.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire and the total loss incurred was still under investigation.-Bernama
