JOHOR BARU: A single mother was charged in the magistrate’s court here today with causing the death of her own two-year-old daughter last week.

Nurul Shamira Mazlan, 21, appeared calm and nodded after the charge was read out to her before magistrate Rashidah Baharom. No plea was recorded.

The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries a mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.

Nurul Shamira is alleged to have caused the death of Nur Shahana Abdus Quddus at an apartment unit on Jalan Kempas Indah in Taman Kempas Indah, here, between Jan 5 and 11.

The woman and her 33-year-old boyfriend were arrested on Jan 14 following a report lodged by the Sultan Ismail Hospital after the doctors suspected elements of abuse on the child’s body when she was brought by her mother to seek treatment for an infection. The girl died on Jan 13.

Benedict Choong Kai-Qi appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyers Muhammad Ashraff Mohd Diah, Mohd Norazihan Adnan and Jack Sumatra.

Feb 24 was sent for remention, pending chemistry and post-mortem reports. - Bernama
