Social security scheme for self-employed expanded to 19 new sectors

KUALA LUMPUR: Online entrepreneurs and food and goods deliverers and transporters are now among those who are able to be insured by the Social Security Organisation (Socso), following the expansion of its Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS).

Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said the scheme will now cover 19 new informal sectors, beginning Jan 1 this year.

Apart from the aforementioned, others who are qualified for coverage are those in the agriculture, livestock, forestry, fisheries, food, manufacturing, construction, information technology, data processing, support services, arts, household services and beauty and healthcare sectors.

In addition, hawkers, accommodation providers, agents and professional services providers are also eligible for coverage.

Previously, when SKSPS was first introduced in 2017, it only provides protection for those in the passenger transportation sector, namely taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers.

According Mohammed Azman, those who wish to be insured under the scheme are required to register themselves and to make contributions with Socso.

He said interested individuals are offered four contribution plans depending, depending on the amount of income they wish to be insured.

“Those who choose an insured monthly income option of RM1,050 will have to contribute RM13.10 each month, RM19.40 for monthly income of RM1,550, RM36.90 for RM2,950 and RM49.40 for an income of RM3,950,” he told a press conference, here, today.

Contributors also have the option to make a lump sum payment for the whole year.

“I hope those who are self-employed will come forward to register themselves under this scheme. They can also make payment online at http://matrix.perkeso.gov.my or pay by cash at any of Socso’s offices,” he added.

Interested parties are required to bring along their identification cards and documentation proof that they are working on their own, such as business license or membership card, Mohammed Azman said.

The SKSPS scheme provides protection for self-employed insured persons against employment injuries including occupational diseases and accidents during work-related activities.

The scheme is only open to Malaysia citizens and permanent residents who are self employed in the country.
