Special Branch officer falls to his death after a party

GEORGE TOWN: A Special Branch officer in Penang fell to his death from an entertainment outlet in a shopping mall, after celebrating a colleague’s birthday.

Northeast district police chief ACP Zaimani Awang said the deceased, Sofian Shahari, 47, was found by a passer-by sprawled in a pool of blood at a parking lot near a hotel in Pulau Tikus at about 4.45am this morning.

He said the officer, who was attached to the district police for around 19 years, had earlier attended his friend’s birthday party at the outlet at about 12.30am.

From initial investigations, Zaimani said the victim’s bag and slippers were found on the second floor in front of a dental centre while the curtain of the entertainment outlet on the fourth floor was torn off.

“We have not ascertained whether the deceased fell from the second or fourth floor as investigations are currently ongoing,“ he said.

He added that the police officer sustained serious head and chest injuries from the fall and post-mortem results revealed he succumbed to injuries from the fall.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage revealed Sofian fell down at about 4.23am and investigators have since ruled out foul play.
