KUALA LUMPUR: In a bid to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus among Parliamentarians, transparent barriers have been installed between the seats of MPs, said Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

She said these barriers will play an important part in reducing the risk of Covid-19 infection in the Dewan.

She added that with the installation of the barriers, MPs who previously occupied seats of Parliament officers on the left side of the hall were now able to sit again in the main block.

“Honourable members need to be patient until all the transparent barriers are set up.

“Some MPs will still have to occupy the officers’ seats on the left and right. Not all seats have been separated with the transparent barriers,” she said when addressing the House before the question-and-answer session.

Azlina said the work to install the barriers would be completed by next week.

She said the barrier is only a temporary fixture and thus not able to withstand too much pressure when pushed or pulled. “MPs are advised to exercise caution,” she said.

She called on MPs to pull the transparent barriers up when seated to ensure distancing and no close contact with the member in the next seat.

She also urged MPs to wear the face mask at all times in the Dewan Rakyat as they are only allowed to remove it when speaking.
