Vehicle ownership transfers can be done online

KUALA LUMPUR: Motor vehicle buyers and sellers need not be present at Road Transport Department (RTD) offices for the transfer of ownership, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pix) yesterday.

He said the process can be done online provided both parties possess a MySikap ID, that can be obtained with a one-time visit to an RTD office for registration and biometric fingerprint verification.

“The system is already in place. Everything can be done online,” he said after officiating at the “My Journey by Bus” exhibition yesterday.

A check with RTD also confirmed that both vehicle buyers and sellers can complete the transfers of ownership through the MySikap system.

While those without a MySikap ID are required to go personally to an RTD office, buyers and sellers could do so separately within seven days.

This is to allow flexibility to buyers and sellers who may not be free at the same time to complete the process.

Loke was responding to queries from the public on whether the ministry intends to make vehicle ownership transfers easier.

This came following the ministry’s move to review the recent suspension of road tax renewals for private vehicles of 2,000cc and above at post offices in Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan and Langkawi.
