PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has strongly condemned the burning of the Jalur Gemilang as shown in a video posted on social media recently.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the controversial video published on the Facebook page of “President Pamatong Supporters” on Jan 19.

“Malaysia strongly condemns the act and views the burning of the Malaysian flag as a serious incident. The flag is a sacred national symbol and should be treated with respect.

“The act and the anti-Malaysia comments made by this individual are offensive, and the accusations made are baseless,” said Wisma Putra today.

It was learnt that the individual who carried out the act, who uses the name Elly Pamatong, is described as the self-proclaimed founder of the “United States Allied Freedom Fighters of the East”.

Pamatong is said to have burnt the flag to protest the presence of Malaysian peacekeeping forces in Mindanao, the Philippines.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry has urged the Philippine government to take stern action against Pamatong and to ensure such incidents do not recur as it could potentially tarnish the cordial relations both countries currently enjoy.
