BALIK PULAU: A family was overcome with grief when their six-year old daughter perished in a fire which engulfed their double-storey house in Taman Lip Sin in Bayan Lepas here.
Almost 60% of the property was destroyed in the blaze which started from the top floor.
The fire spread quickly, owing to the high humidity, to an extent that it took only minutes to reach the ground floor.
Firemen who arrived at the scene at around 4.20pm managed to contain the blaze but were unable to save the child who was believed to have been trapped on the top floor.
State Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Shamsol Alam Man confirmed the incident and said that a detailed investigation would be carried out.
State welfare committee chairman Phee Boon Poh expressed his condolences on the incident on social media.
