Sweden to cull 1.3 million chickens after bird flu found at biggest egg producer

STOCKHOLM, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Sweden will cull around 1.3 million chickens after bird flu was found on a farm in the southwest of the country, the Board of Agriculture said on Monday.

The H5N5 variant of bird flu was discovered at Sweden's biggest egg producer near the town of Monsteras on Jan. 18.

"Unfortunately, the disease has spread within the facility which means that a large portion of all the animals, around 1.3 million, will be culled and destroyed," the Board of Agriculture said in a statement. (Reporting by Simon Johnson; Editing by Susan Fenton)
