KUALA KUBU BAHARU: UMNO will support the chosen Unity Government candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election set to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 11, UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

The support stems from the party’s principles of honouring the decision among Unity Government component parties regarding seats won by respective parties, he said, stressing he hoped that should there be any issues or contrary statements made by component party leaders regarding the matter, it would merely be a temporary stand by their parties.

“I think we need to be in a situation of political harmony as it will make it easier for the Prime Minister, as the Unity Government chairman, to find common ground and if there’s any differences, in my opinion, they can be resolved in the best manner,” the Deputy Prime Minister told the media when asked about MCA and MIC’s announcement that they would not campaign for the by-election should the candidate not be from Barisan Nasional (BN).

“The Prime Minister will also have a meeting with them and I understand the situation faced by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong when the statement was issued,” he added.

In other developments, Ahmad Zahid said that former Selangor UMNO treasurer, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who resigned early April, will be assigned a new responsibility of arranging strategies and implement political activities outside the UMNO and BN framework.
