PETALING JAYA: Taiwan aims to offer the world a better understanding about the country’s smart medical industry via a series of webinars on smart medical products as the fight against Covid-19 continues.

Over the past decade, medicine and technology have needed to join hands to help change people’s lives. Today, the medical-related expenditure worldwide is reaching US$8.7 trillion (RM36.3 trillion), making the integration of two industries even more essential than before.

The healthcare and medical industry has become a huge business potential worth more than US$158 billion in applications of medical IOT.

Taiwan External Trade Development Council (Taitra) President and CEO Walter Yeh said driven by both the pandemic crisis and the accelerating 5G trend, Taiwan’s dynamic medical industry has shown its innovative power in smart medical technologies, surgeries and medical devices.

“Taiwan excels in a number of medical specialties, such as telehealth technologies, the use of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery, all which rank among the highest in Asia.

“Taiwan has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Covid-19 may restrain our physical interaction, but it does not restrain our capacity for innovation,“ said Yeh at the Smart Medical Express online product launch yesterday.

The first of the Smart Medical Express product launch series was “Changing Lives Through the Best Practice”, featuring four Taiwan Excellence award-winning brands, namely, Mediland Enterprise Corp, MedicalTek Co Ltd, Asiatic Fiber Corp and Doctor’s Friends Medical Instrument Co Ltd.

The product launch included Mediland’s surgical tables and surgical lights, MedicalTek’s MonoStereo endoscopic visualisation system, Asiatic Fiber’s personal protection equipment (PPE) textiles and surgical textiles, as well as Doctor’s Friend’s suction machines, all of which provided smart medical solutions for hospitals and medical institutions.

The online event was part of a series of events held by Taitra to highlight the country’s strengths in smart medical industry and to boost economic activities amid the global standstill, according to the trade promotion body.

The event attracted over 1,700 viewers online from Malaysia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Germany and more. More events will be held for medical products, including beauty products, eye care, assisting devices for elders and dentistry.
