KUALA LUMPUR: The industrial and economic activities in the Klang District are allowed to operate as usual with strict adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Senior Minister cum International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (pix) said the decision was taken after considering the current health situation in the district and the importance of ensuring economic sustainability.
He said the authorities would step up the enforcement and monitor the compliance of SOPs to ensure the safety of workers and people in the Klang District.
“The government is aware that companies and industries, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), have invested to install security facilities and additional health protocols at their respective work premises since the government reopened the economic sector in early May 2020,“ he said in a statement after attending the 22nd special session of the National Security Council (NSC) virtual meeting here today.
The meeting, which was chaired by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, specifically discussed the Covid-19 situation in the country, including that of the Klang District.
Azmin said the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) would like to remind that companies and related industries must comply with the SOPs and failure to do so could result in immediate termination of operations and legal action against offenders in accordance with the laws and regulations.
He said the government’s decision takes into account the need to balance the safety and health of the people, as well as to ensure the continuity of employment and economic development efforts, as well as no disruption of the supply chain such as logistics, transportation, and food and beverages.
“In ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of the current economic recovery phase, the government will not compromise efforts to ensure the safety and health of the people,“ he said.
Selangor contributes 24% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 30% to the country’s manufacturing sector, and there are nearly 3.5 million workers in Selangor which is 23.2% of the total labour force in the country.
The Klang District is a major industrial centre and a major hub for container ports in Malaysia, with the contribution of trade activities in Port Klang exceeding RM400 billion in 2019. — Bernama
