No plans for postal votes for outstation Sabah voters, says EC

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) said it has no plans to introduce postal voting for Sabah voters who are living outstation such as in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

EC deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom said in a statement today that any improvement can only be done if and when the transparency of the voting process can be maintained.

“The EC will continue to fix the postal voting process, besides also thinking of alternatives for outstation voters. The EC will pay full attention to the necessary improvements with a task force formed specially to study this issue. It is a process that cannot be rushed and any improvement must be done meticulously,“ he said.

He was responding to calls from NGO Global Bersih, which on Aug 5, urged the EC to provide postal vote access for outstation Sabah voters for the upcoming state elections.

Azmi also said with the temporary suspension of the Express Mail Service and international mail and package service to all international destination except for Singapore since Aug 3, the EC will use international courier services to send out postal ballots for the elections.
