109,232 kids aged 5 and below given polio vaccination in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: A total of 109,232 children aged five and below were given the oral polio vaccination (OPV) in Sabah during the Supplementary Immunisation Activity (SIA) which began on Dec 27, 2019.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix) said the immunisation process covered 25 districts in Sabah.

“The implementation of SIA in several districts was challenging in terms of logistics and safety of the health workers. Certain places required them to travel by boats or to walk a 3km stretch to reach the village,“ said Hisham in a statement today.

He praised public health workers and volunteers who have been working tirelessly to safe vaccinate the people.

“I would like to thank all health staff and volunteers on the field who are working hard to save the nation from polio. They are the invisible public health heroes,” he said.

To date, three polio cases in Sabah have been recorded, at Sandakan, Tuaran and Kinabatangan.
