SANDAKAN: A total of 350 victims from 77 families were moved to a Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at the Batu Sapi People’s Housing Project (PPR) multipurpose hall near here after their houses in Kampung Sundang Laut water village were destroyed in a fire this morning.

According to a statement from the Sabah Civil Defence Force (APM) today, a total of 314 victims from 74 families evacuated were citizens, while the rest were foreign nationals in the 7.50 am incident today.

“A total of 53 houses were affected but no casualties were reported in the incident,“ the statement said.

According to the statement, the victims who were evacuated to the hall were also given food and drinks as well as other necessities borne by the Sabah General Welfare Services Department.

In the incident this morning, the Sandakan Zone Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) comprising 40 officers and members led by Zone chief Martin Thomas managed to control the fire from spreading at 9.17 am and saved about 100 houses in the village from being destroyed.

The village had also suffered a similar incident in December 2017 involving 57 houses.- Bernama
