Organiser expecting more participants this year with addition of Men’s and Women’s Open Road Race categories and cash prizes totalling RM14,600

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA) Cross Country Run – Go For It! 2024 returns this year with its 37th edition and the inclusion of two more categories, the Men’s Open (Road Race) and the Women’s Open (Road Race).

FTKLAA president Datuk Seri Dr V. Pulainthiran said the event is set to take place at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur on July 14, adding that it is expected to draw 2,000 participants compared with 900 last year.

“The addition of the Men’s and Women’s Open was made at the request of the runners, so we are confident of attracting more participants this year.

“STM Lottery Sdn Bhd is the title sponsor for the seventh consecutive year. Its support has been instrumental in the success of this event.”

Pulainthiran said this year, FTKLAA has prepared total cash prizes of RM14,600 to be distributed to the first, second, third, fourth and fifth winners of each category.

“Each participant will also receive a finisher medal, an e-certificate and a T-shirt as tokens of appreciation for their participation and dedication to the sport.”

Pulainthiran said the run also serves as a platform to encourage family participation and inspire them to prioritise their well-being and adopt a more active lifestyle.

“Additionally, there are specific categories tailored for children, featuring distances of 7km and 3km. They have been designed after considering their age and developmental stage.”

He said FTKLAA has been approached by members of the differently abled community, who expressed interest in participating.

“Around 30 individuals with disabilities have conveyed interest to be a part of our event. This calls for careful planning to ensure we can accommodate participants with disabilities.”

Pulainthiran said while FTKLAA welcomes differently abled individuals and is happy to include them in sporting activities, much thought has to be given to ensure they are comfortable with the races and potential challenges of being in a large crowd.

STM Lottery Communications and Sustainability deputy general manager Giam Say Khoon said the event would be an unforgettable celebration of athleticism, determination and community unity.

“We firmly believe in the transformative power of sports. The event will provide a platform for youths to explore their potential.

“That is why FTKLAA has been actively reaching out to schools and urging them to send their talented young runners to participate in the run. It is not merely a test of physical endurance, but also ignites the spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition.”

Giam said apart from the races, participants will also have a chance to win prizes in the lucky draw.

“Last year, a lucky draw winner took home a motorbike. We intend to continue this tradition this year.”
